Scanning the skies for Zone-tailed hawks

Very similar in size and shape to the very common Turkey Vulture , the Zone-tailed Hawk is quite often found circling on the wind currents with those very vultures. This allows the Zone-tailed Hawk to approach much closer, before swooping in quickly. There is a small population in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, and northern Argentina.

The best birding of the day was found along the much quieter roads in the south east section. However, the crest is not always obvious and its diet is likely to contain birds and small mammals as well as reptiles. It is an easy bird to identify in flight with its broad white bands along the underside of the wings and tail.
