All of these things can be found in Las Vegas, Nevada. That is, all of them can be found in Las Vegas except the last one on the list. To get to the sewage ponds you have to go to Henderson, which is a quick drive to the southeast of Las Vegas, about twenty minutes from the strip. Birds, of course! (

With all of my gallivanting across a small swath of the American Southwest last week, I plumb forgot to ask you where you were birding. Hopefully, you can find consolation for this oversight in the fact that I saw lots of juicy (figuratively, not literally) birds from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. How about you?

Many were specifically established for migratory birds and are strategically positioned along one of the four major North American migration flyways. Others were established to protect specific bird species or subspecies. As a result, there are excellent birding hotspots in the system. Some just seem to be rarity magnets.

On my western sojourn back in June we made a half-day visit to the absolutely gorgeous Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area near Las Vegas. It is an attractive and kind of awe-inspiring little bird, as most creatures that can survive in harsh conditions are (at least to me). Click the image above for a bigger version.

Pigeons are, perhaps, the most loathed of birds. And now Clark County commissioner Chris Giunchigliani has proposed making it illegal to feed pigeons in unincorporated areas of the county, which includes Las Vegas.

The good folks at the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority extended an invite to 10,000 Birds to send one of us bloggers to the annual birding festival held in this town about an hour east of Reno. I’ve never really been to Nevada—just a layover in the Las Vegas airport, where I was amused to see slot machines at the gates.
