I don’t know if you have ever tried to bird with a cold, but it’s not easy. Still, we are in the midst of spring migration here in North Carolina, and I wasn’t going to let a little cold stop me from seeing some birds. Wayne Bailey-Caswell Game Land a little past 2 p.m. Another birding fail.

I love birding games. I’m constantly on the lookout for different angles to take with my birding. Not that birding for its own sake isn’t great, but sometimes you need that extra little motivation to get you out the door on a day you’d just as well sleep in. For me, that’s the best part anyway.

It was freedom from studies and classrooms, and the weather also made it possible to play baseball, video games, tag, and (in my case), study bird books and look for birds. It was the big break of the year but I didn’t look for as many birds then as I did during spring and fall migration.

Recently a baby was born in North Carolina with Trisomy 13, a chromosomal abnormality so severe most carriers die at birth. Bring your kids to the mud pit/water fight/pie throw, and let them get as filthy as they like (and join them, if you’re game). No balloons.

The Northern Mockingbird is easily the most famous, celebrated in classic literature and song and deemed notable enough to have the honor of being the official state bird of five southern states. Lately it’s almost certainly my young son’s cry of “kitty-cat bird!&# Or at least it’s supposed to.
