The Christmas Bird Count was the answer. The IWC census starts from mid-January following the logic that it is the period when the birds have reached their wintering grounds and are rather static, so the chance of double-counting the same flock is minimal. But it is so frustrating to pass the birds by without IDing them!

It gets interesting here, because the bar manager had no idea it was a rare bird and was just helping out a bird that had flown into a window. There were a lot of birds about at this early hour and we were very surprised to see seven Magpie Geese fly by. He had no idea it was a rare bird and subsequently buried it.

A bit of background: Pink Pigeons are medium-sized, pink/gray/ brown birds found on the island of Mauritius, Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. Mauritius may sound familiar, it was also the home of one of our most famous extinct birds—the Dodo. Don’t these birds care about propagating their species?
