More than 50 years ago, the Hawaiian Goose (Nene) was one of the first birds listed under the Endangered Species Act, part of the inaugural “ Class of 1967 ”. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed downlisting it from “endangered” to “threatened.”. It can be found in a variety of habitats at a range of elevations.

Ulva island is a small island, adjacent to Stewart, where the Department of Conservation has made a herculean effort to remove all the mammalian predators that are literally wiping many New Zealand birds right off the planet. A large number of birds here were, or became flightless, as the was no need to fly away from anything.

Efforts to protect some of the most vulnerable species would be redirected to better protecting the larger swathe of species held in important habitat.

Case in point: some of my family members have become active with feral cat colony organizations. On the one hand, it’s better than doing nothing with a feral cat colony. But I don’t agree with the supplemental feeding that happens with feral cats–if you’re gonna call them wildlife, treat them as such.
