Black Vulture – The bird that has been reported the most in Queens that I have never seen.

Sandhill Cranes , ancient and currently abundant – the most abundant species of crane in the world – are nevertheless almost miraculous to me every time I see them. The five subspecies – Greater, Lesser, Mississippi, Florida, Cuban – show the genetic marks of what the species has had to do to survive.

There’s a Bewick’s Wren in Our Garden

A few weeks ago I was working out in the garden and noticed a small bird flutter into the garden. This bird didn’t look like the Bewick’s Wrens I was used to seeing. I believe the bird pictured above (click on photos for full sized images) is possibly a young bird going through its prejuvenal molt.

First, it was really close to the road, close enough that the birds in the nest, if it was a nest at all, would feel the wind from the larger, faster passing semis. and in the world of birds, a pair of eagles qualifies. This make sense in a certain way; a species of carnivores that over-concentrated in space would go extinct.

In reverse order, the medals were awarded for “most species seen in a country”, to Australia with 420, USA got the silver, scoring 556 while the runaway winner was Costa Rica with 646 species. Collaborative list – September 2018

It’s September and time for birds to start their southerly journeys. Please remember to give migrating birds the space that they need. They noted 598 species as a team, bringing the year total to 2118 and pushing the life list to 3555. Jason hoisted his colours in Kansas and claimed the state for 10,000 Birds.
