Happy New Year, 10,000 Birds readers and writers, listers and photographers, friends and fellow travelers near and far! Writing a post scheduled for January 1st for a birding blog is a big responsibility. On the first of the year, every bird is a new bird! It was a United States lower-48 birding year for me.

The Sunda Teal is a brown duck. This may make it very popular amongst European birders who can relate, but it doesn’t make it much of a deal within such an illustrous group as the dabbling ducks. The place where you look forward to the birds, but not the birding. No, definitely not the birding.

No matter how much I want to make sure these stories are all about the birds, there is just something I just have to get off my chest. I have now flown to New Zealand, in search of as many new bird species as I can track down, at a semi-pedestrian pace, mixed with some normal tourist activities. It’s all about March 1st. It is gone.
