Birding Shanghai in May 2024

10,000 Birds

The month starts with many birds and ends with very few – but some of those are quite spectacular. If there ever was a misnamed bird, it is the white-faced morph of the Black Bulbul. Apparently, the bird can warm itself if it gets cold. This bird is still at least 1000 km away from its breeding grounds.

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 1)

10,000 Birds

Given that according to the HBW, the species prefers dense primary and secondary montane forests, the note that the bird also forages among kitchen waste (in the same HBW entry) seems somewhat incongruous. Birding Wuyuan, China

10,000 Birds

In retrospect, this weekend at Wuyuan was not exactly my finest hour as a bird photographer – hopefully, I could do better now, and perhaps one day I will, should normal traveling ever be possible again in China. I’d rather see yellow birds than yellow plants. Such a cute bird deserves a better representation.

Birding Shanghai in October 2022

10,000 Birds

Well, they mainly feed on birds, which may explain their low popularity. For the White-throated Rock Thrush , Wikipedia gives the slightly puzzling statement “The bird’s population is unknown, but is not increasing or declining.” Even if they look as charming as this Northern Boobook. Unfortunately, it is true though.
