Imagine waking up to the call of thousands of ducks, geese, and every kind of marsh bird you can imagine. Our 5th wheel and truck are parked in just about as close to the middle of this central Oregon refuge as possible. By the time we left, I had recorded one new Lifer, 12 New Year Birds, and a total of 76 species.

Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge : Open to migratory bird hunting (youth only). The Refuge is now home to nearly 200 species of birds, over 50 species of mammals, 25 species of reptiles and amphibians, and a wide variety of insects, fish and plants. This is an Urban Refuge ! Why would you open it up to hunting?

In 1987, only 27 were left in the wild and drastic action was taken to save the species: all remaining birds were captured, the California Condor was declared extinct in the wild, and a captive breeding program was begun, initially carried out by the San Diego Wild Animal Park and the Los Angeles Zoo.

In North American birding, east versus west is the most basic geographic division of the continent. American White Pelicans have been making a bit of a splash in the northeast United States lately, with more and more birds straying into the region over the years. Good birding and happy drinking!
