It was my second field guide, and I quickly gave it that worn look I imagined all “real” birder’s field guides had by dropping it into the creek at Allaire State Park in New Jersey (by accident!). Am I willing to give up the field guide which bears the mud and dirt of so many falls on so many birding trips?

The heat map is revealing: Unsurprisingly for a site founded and run by two New Yorkers (one of whom literally wrote the book on birding New York), the Empire State boasts the highest number of species (316). California (297) is next, followed by Florida (227), Oregon (209), and New Jersey (199).
