My daughter and I were exploring our yard the other day, which presented the perfect opportunity to introduce her to one of the coolest, cuddliest caterpillars of all… The wonderful Woolly Bear Caterpillar ( Pyrrharctia isabella ) is a common sight once October rolls around in temperate regions of the United States east of the Mississippi.

Frustratingly Common

Bearing the same designation but actually commonplace is the infrequently encountered Common Pauraque. I had just turned my lights on and it was a Common Pauraque that hopped from the road back into the leaf litter. They are decidedly uncommon in T&T but surely ubiquitous somewhere else.

A Near Conjunction

It glared at something in the leaf litter (is there any other way raptors look at anything?) Here, a considerable amount of the forest has been removed for the first hundred or two metres into the road, including several fruit-bearing trees that used to attract a myriad of higher altitude specialists.

On the Edge.

The tracks of two young Polar Bear skirt a crack in the sea ice in Admiralty Inlet. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Still, with that many bear you have to stay vigilant.

Uncharacteristically Wet

Bear in mind that the year thus far is supposed to be the dry season, as outlined previously. Alas, nothing showed until there was a brief break in the shower and a Golden-crowned Warbler materialized in the leaf litter just in front of me. Not only that, but we were under our third adverse weather advisory for the year.

This is common with life-threatening situations and expected; any ancient ancestors who would have not paid heed to close calls would have likely been quickly and savagely selected from the gene pool (just trying to pet the Short-faced Bear again…). These smart looking birds are tropical sparrows.
