Queens County Bird Club 2018 Big Sit Results

We had persevered through four years at the top of Battery Harris Platform and could bring our experience to bear on the task of trying to record as many species as possible on a single day from that single spot. I had high hopes for the 5th Annual Queens County Bird Club Big Sit this past Saturday at Fort Tilden.

One of the falcons was on a whitewashed perch, a little above the aerie, and shortly after the silence returned the other revealed itself by calling, hidden from view in the cave that makes their nest. I scanned the frozen ocean, after all this is Polar Bear country. George’s Society Cliffs, to the Gyrfalcon aerie.

Sibley Birds East & Sibley Birds West: A Review

Am I willing to give up the field guide which bears the mud and dirt of so many falls on so many birding trips? And, that falcons are about as far away from hawks as a bird family could get. The guide that flips open automatically to Semipalmated, Western, and Least Sandpipers, a testament to my continuing learning curve with peeps?
