Like manky mallards, ganky geese display remarkable variety due to both the methodical manipulations of breeders and the variable volatility of the more natural kind of breeding. Even the ones that bear the same plumage as their progenitors, however, can usually be distinguished by their larger bulk. Hat-tip to Stella.

The lower bird is almost certainly littoralis the general upperpart tone lighter olive grey; the more prominent supercilium; whiter median and greater covert tips as opposed to buff; white rather than dirty grey outer tail feathers and restricted flank smudging and streaking all point to this individual being a Scandinavian Rock Pipit.

Informed literature bears out my experience that most birds are seen singly or in pairs. Outside of the breeding season a few birds may join together in a loose flock if the feeding is good. Hat-tip to Stella. The former British colony’s Z.c. The proposal from U.S. Wicked, right?

Though the coast of British Columbia, a part of the Great Bear Rainforest, was rich in both, it was appallingly deficient in scientific data. The species was seemingly killed off by feather hunters, but then, after years, reappeared at the site of one of the deserted breeding colonies, Torishima Island in Japan.
