Predictably, the flowers attract several species of sunbirds. Apparently, many bird species have employed the same concept as me for a long time. While waiting for the barn owls, an Asian Barred Owlet made a brief appearance. Somewhat predictably, the star among them is the adult male Crimson Sunbird. Birds, maybe?

Birding the Kruger Park (1): Skukuza area

There are quite a few raptor species around Skukuza. A Barn Owl slept peacefully on the inside of the roof of a well-visited tourist cafe. It warned me not to order the latte though – overpriced and not very good, according to the owl. Most likely, the devil, not god created this species.

Little Big Year – Week 35: Route 66, Tucumcari and The Albuquerque area

I spooked three Barn Owls out of a dense scrub row, just as the sun was setting. This did open up the area to a few new species, like this Wilson’s Warbler. Along the irrigation canal, there were over a dozen species flying around. This leaves the Little Big Year numbers looking like this: Little Big Year species – 903.

In reverse order, the medals were awarded for “most species seen in a country”, to Australia with 420, USA got the silver, scoring 556 while the runaway winner was Costa Rica with 646 species. Barn Owl – Tyto alba. Indian Scops-Owl – Otus bakkamoena. Eurasian Scops-Owl – Otus scops.

During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species. Elephant Butte Dam area, New Mexico. Barn Owl – Tyto alba. The equanimity occurred as the two totals passed 3560. Alphabetic Taxonomic. 12 Oct 2018.
