Barn Owl on a dry tree trunk and a… traffic jam!

That means it also has many tropical birds that a foreigner living in China can see without risking to leave the country (which would mean 2 weeks of quarantine on reentry at best and complete exclusion at worst, depending on the ever-changing regulations). Apparently, many bird species have employed the same concept as me for a long time.

Birding the Kruger Park (1): Skukuza area

A Barn Owl slept peacefully on the inside of the roof of a well-visited tourist cafe. It warned me not to order the latte though – overpriced and not very good, according to the owl. While some bustards are the largest bird species capable of flight, the Black-bellied Bustard is only mid-sized. Quite a beauty.

Little Big Year – Week 35: Route 66, Tucumcari and The Albuquerque area

Old cars, antique gas pumps, and neon lit motels, were just up Jeanne’s photographic alley, and Lake Tucumcari was sure to be a birding hot spot for me. Unfortunately, the lake was the victim of several years of draught, but the grassy areas held a few nice birds, and there were a few surprises along the way. This was a first!

During October, 7 countries (Costa Rica, Australia, USA, India, Hong Kong, UK, Serbia) were birded by 11 beats who shared 135 checklists and noted 697 species.
