Through multi-partnerships, cooperation, federal funding, and the private conservation efforts of one family, 616 acres were officially added to the Cherokee National Forest in September 2018. Bald Eagle.

Having flown to Washington State on a family vacation the first obstacle was easily out of the way, which you knew already if you ever read this blog. Bald Eagles competed with hauled out Harbor Seals for our attention and we were told that the concentration of eagles was due to the salmon not yet running in the rivers.

The last weekend of January found me in the frosty Pacific Northwest, meeting some long over due work and family obligations. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. Established in 1974 to protect the delta, which is formed where the fresh water of the Nisqually River meets to nutrient rich, tidal salt water of the Puget Sound.

Daily birding in my own hometown added to the joy of seeing common species in uncommon circumstances, like a Bald Eagle perched on a Destin sand dune. Marks National Wildlife Refuge replenished by naturalist spirit, but remained all I could manage. Not so much. And the third trimester?

This location is great as it is close to Jeanne’s Family, as well as a very short drive to the Billy Frank Jr. This refuge came up as #4 on a recent list of the top 25 National Wildlife Refuges that were featured in a great story here by 10000 Birds own Jason Crotty. Nisqually NWR. I got to see several Brown Creepers in the area.
