My extended family from The Bronx visited us this weekend for some upstate festivities. What could be better than the New York State Fair, especially after a Bald Eagle deigned to circle overhead in honor of everything that makes the Empire State great? Enjoy what today has to offer while looking forward to what is to come.

I just enjoyed a lightning strike visit to NYC for family and fun, then endured the trip back home. Considering that we’re also celebrating Memorial Day here in the States (which extends our weekend a full day) I’m tempted to declare the soaring adult Bald Eagle I spotted to be my best bird of the weekend.

The flash of white in the tail and the sheer size of the bird made me think Bald Eagle and when I put my binoculars up I was correct. So take your non-birding family, friends, and acquaintances camping and let them see and hear the natural world through your senses. I explained and offered my binoculars for him to take a look.

I haven’t done any surveys, but I would bet my binoculars that images and stories of hawks attract more attention and adoration from birders and the average person on the street than any other bird family. Families do not hike up mountains to sit all day on pointy rocks to watch woodpeckers. It’s a Bald Eagle, a hawk.
