Birding from New York to North Carolina

Last year it was New Providence in the Bahamas. Instead of being around for breeding birds like my last visit I would be focusing on migratory species and Cape Henlopen delivered with forty-six species in an hour-and-a-half of birding. Upside-down, right side up, it doesn’t matter to Brown-headed Nuthatches.

Petrel Paradise

In particular the South Island destination of Kaikoura is world-renowned for the flocks of albatrosses and giant petrels floating right off the pelagic boat, and the ease of the trip makes it a must-visit for any visiting birder. Wicked, right? One birder from Australia even got his lifer Red-crowned Parakeet ! Hat-tip to Stella.

The Little Big Year 2018: Best Birds of the Year!

While visiting the Kakadu National Park, I was able to photograph this Rainbow Bee eater right after it had caught a dragonfly. The birds are now breeding in the area, but are quite happy to keep coming to the daily feeding station in groups of over 100 birds.
