Great Gray Owl in Keene, New York

Now, those of you familiar with my tendency to chase birds in New York and knowledgeable of the spate of Great Gray Owls we have had in 2017 might question why it took me to nearly the end of March to make a trip upstate to see one. The first shot of the bird I got. Out-of-focus, distant, and lousy. It was stunning.

Midsummer in northern Australia

Each week as I schedule my post it brings my attention to the huge time difference between Broome and New York. The flight of these birds is rapid and erratic and they are often heard as they fly over. My Father’s Mother had a pen-pal in the 1930′s in Vienna, Austria. It now has a home in the tropics!

Black Woodpecker: Officially a Nemesis

I have never before had a true nemesis bird. Sure, occasionally a bird has given me problems, like Black-backed Woodpeckers back in 2007 when I was doing an alleged Big Year in New York State, but not seeing a bird for a single year does not make it a nemesis. I better not miss this bird again.
