Unwanted farm dogs are another source. In 2007, 394 dogs died during procedures for canine and human research. None of the animal shelters contacted by the Herald Sun have come across ex-research dogs in need of a home. The selling of dogs from the pound for this purpose is morally wrong. Dogs are able to detect diseases such as cancer and diabetes and warn humans of impending heart attacks and strokes. Dogs Sniffing Out Disease. As we know, dogs have a keen sense of smell. More research is needed, but initial studies by the Pine Street Foundation and others on using dogs for diagnosis are promising.
