Originally from India and the vicinity, it is believed that they had already undergone two major expansions – through Asia Minor in the 1600s, and then across Europe in the 1900s – when they first appeared in North America. They are very common in Central Asia, which is very roughly comparable to the prairies.

This is very bad news for a group that is largely nocturnal and has adapted to a secretive lifestyle, and is thus best detected by its tracks and signs. I definitely recommend it to naturalists in North America and East Asia as well. I also wish to emphasize that this is not only a book for European (and British…) naturalists.
