Schoolkids Across Asia Team Up to Save the Spoon-Billed Sandpiper

The project recruited schoolkids from eight Asian nations, from Russia down to Thailand, to help color in frames of an animation that depicts the lonely and perilous migration of a Spoon-billed Sandpiper as it faces threats from habitat loss and hunting. (Hat tip to Clare M. for the scoop!)

Asia’s Deadliest Bird: The Brown Prinia

The prinias are a group of around 25 Old World warbler species found in Africa and Asia. It inhabits rather dry areas within a region notorious for being one of the rainiest parts of the world, and is thus patchily distributed from Burma through Laos, Cambodia, parts of Thailand and south China, all the way to Vietnam. Yes, indeed.

Carlos chose a pigeon that pretty much everyone should want to see: My best bird of the year came right at the beginning of January as I was wrapping up my travels in Thailand.

On the way I managed to sneak in a manic day of birding in and around the capital of Thailand, Bangkok. Bang Pra is a reservoir and no-hunting area to the south east of Bangkok. No matter, the warm fire and comforts of home are nice, as is the winter birding here.

Nordmann’s Greenshank photographed hunting on the Cairns Esplanade [Ken Cross]. I already had Nordmann’s on my life list from a single sighting of two birds in coastal Thailand back in 1995. In south east Asia, the birds are tied to the estuarine habitat and are recognised as crab specialists. That was clearly some time ago.]
