Birding the Kruger Park (2): Bateleur area

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Habitat loss, as documented by hieroglyphs. The active colonies of wasps are efficient protection against primates and large avian predators.

It is an impressive bird (for a prinia – these birds are not usually very flashy) – eBird calls the species a “large, fierce-eyed prinia with a long, oft-cocked tail” There even is a separate document just on the vocalization of the Hill Prinia, if you are interested (frankly, I am not).

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan

I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. The White-rumped Shama is a South Asia species – consequently, the HBW mostly discusses its introduced population in Hawaii. A worrying trend.

Pulling Birds at Panti Forest in Malaysia

We got good looks at Yellow-breasted , Crimson-breasted , Yellow-vented , and Orange-bellied Flowerpeckers along with more mundane representatives of the sunbird family, Plain Sunbird and Thick-billed Spiderhunter. Asia is home to all kinds of cuckoos, but none are as elaborately colorful as malkohas with those gaudy faces and painted bills.
