Not enough Woodpeckers

The little red bit on the crown on this photo indicates that it is a male bird. The species name “tukki” is not derived from a beloved but now extinct Eastern European car brand but from the Sumatran word for woodpecker. The pink lipstick shape on the face of the bird counterintuitively indicates that this is a male.

When you think of the best birding in the south of Asia, it is Malaysia that comes to mind, although you are likely not to even think of the country as such: you are dreaming of the (Malaysian) province of Sabah, in the north of the island of Borneo.
