What put this once small fishing town on the map was not birds but mammals, specifically whales and dolphins. The reason Kaikoura is such a great place to see albatrosses and whales is one and the same, and the same reason indeed that Monterrey in California is a great place to watch whales and albatross.

They are ridiculously unafraid of people there – so the cynic in me suspects that swan meat is not regarded as tasty by the Japanese (another explanation, that the Japanese just like animals too much, can presumably be discarded given the country’s very principled approach in insisting on the right to kill whales).

We loved seeing penguins, whales, polar bears, and wolves. Truly a series for any animal lover, but more than that, it’s an amazing look at our planet. We watched in amazement as a furry caterpillar froze and thawed each year until finally becoming a moth at age 14!
