I thought it was an urban myth that animal shelters would actually turn over unwanted animals to laboratories for research, but apparently not. Montcalm County has taken a step towards ending its relationship with an animal research facility.

I didn't know that there were specific breeders out there producing animal subjects for medical research. According to this article, some are so bad that the University of California and the University of Cincinnati have actually decided to end their relationships with them and stop purchasing animals bred for research use.

The Texas Attorney General ruled earlier this month that the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center can withhold records of a committee that oversees the use of animals in training and research. The university also purchased dogs from the shelter up until 2007, Carruth said. I bet there's probably some ugly stuff in those records.

In a brief tour of a particular biotech research company, I was taken to the animal lab. Interesting that many of the grants this place gets specifically say they can't experiment on any domesticated animals (cats and dogs I guess.). It reminded me of an adoption poster at the animal shelter. Weird, weird, weird.

The controversial resolution, submitted by the AVMA’s House Advisory Committee, called on the association to oppose the use of live animals “procured from animal shelters or the use of live animals procured from dealers” for use in veterinary education.
