In Africa, one elephant is being killed every 15 minutes. But the “illegal international trade” is already there, killing – among other places – in Kruger (S. Africa), Hwange (Zimbabwe) and, recently, in Chobe national park in Botswana (the one that was considered so safe that the Clintons have visited it as a presidential couple)!

As the national bird of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the African Fish Eagle is usually very busy whenever it stays in these countries, giving speeches, opening shopping centers, etc. Others are being killed for use in traditional medicine. As usual at Kruger, there are a few animals that are irrelevant for birders.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!).

The others follow, some dozen animals in all. Historical poaching (this population was restocked from Zimbabwe) has clearly left its mark on the gene pool. If such a trend continues, we will lose these animals for good! Driving slowly behind them… The guide knows his animals. They are crossing one or two at a time.

He subsequently leaves for Peru and gets kidnapped and killed by Sendero Luminoso – the local brand of Maoists. It has all Big Five animals and a whole lot of other grumpy mammals. After finishing yet another water stewardship training for a large beverage company in Accra I had some time to kill.
