The day after, a colleague and I were flown by helicopter to a small town along the Mississippi River that was still isolated by flood waters nearly three weeks after Katrina tore through. It had taken the company this long to get a team out to rescue any impacted wild animals. Oil was everywhere. I’m glad we lived.

Seems odd, although officials with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality said that fish they've tested have not been killed by oil, but a lack of oxygen in the water. Their justification was that the animals don’t necessarily approach the very few reinforced areas and must be tracked down and baited so further studies can be made, despite the fact that this disrupted the animals’ natural cycles (thus rendering observations invalid) and caused irreversible damage to the delicate environment.

According to this article, "at least 25 sea turtles have washed up dead on Mississippi beaches over the past few days, according to multiple media reports. The plan has been reviewed by >30 migratory bird biologist of the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways and both Flyways have supported the season.
