Portugal is NOT known for its kindness to animals so this is a significant development for a Portuguese city. Under Portuguese legislation, stray and unwanted animals that are kept in municipal kennels, even healthy ones, can be put down after eight days if unclaimed. From the Portugal News Online.

Figures released by the National Veterinary Authority, Direção Geral de Alimentação e Veterinária, show that in the Lisbon area alone, a total of 5,629 stray cats and dogs were caught last year, up from the 4,442 caught in 2010.

Right at the top of the list is the awareness that your new rescue has a shady history, especially if it was a stray. Even if you don’t own other animals it’s a good idea to take advantage of this process. Most shelter staff will refer to this as kennel fever, noted by a negative impact of remaining locked up in the kennel too long.

NEW JERSEY – Animal shelters are full, they have no space, they often have no money, and they have a small amount of dedicated volunteers. Many of these boarding animals are forgotten. There is an estimated 3-4million pets euthanized each year in US animal shelters. That’s 10,000 per day on average. Look at tail wag.
