A New York Times story that ran in 2001 about a homeless dog wandering around a suburban part of New York City, struck a chord with me. They offered him hand-outs and cared enough about him, not to call Animal Control and risk having him picked up and sent to a shelter where his fate would be doomed.

They might also have the misconception that pets are shelters might be there because there was a problem with the animal. In fact, most pets end up in shelters not because of any problem pet behavior, but because an owner died, moved, or simply didn’t have the time or money to care for the animal.

This time of year, I worry about animals who are bought or adopted as gifts. This assumes that everyone also agrees that the animal will be part of the family for life. But a puppy isn't going to mend your relationship with your child any more than a child is going to mend your relationship with your partner.
