It was after that date that many of the great and strange animals of that island went extinct, presumably because of human hunting. One of those animals was the Giant Elephant Bird (including, but not limited to, Aepyornis maximus ). Actual cut marks made by actual stone tools are in fact never unequivocal.

Animals obviously see death and experience it as we do, so the question is not one of if, but of how. Elephants, peccaries, and corvids have all been documented processing the death of (as we put it) a loved one. Or was it all dumb luck, the randomness of nature at play, pure coincidence?
