And the last notable animals we saw were a troupe of Rhesus Macaques on the roadside. I still do not like monkeys very much. The bird was trying to look stately, dignified, and menacing, which was not very convincing after we had just watched it failing to catch some prey on the ground. It probably thought we had not seen that.

The arrival of 48 monkeys on a flight from China this weekend has brought Air Canada under fire for shipping primates destined for research laboratories, but the airline says it is obliged by federal law to accept monkeys as cargo. Under pressure from animal rights groups and the public, many airlines have banned the practice.

These are the tradeoffs of modern life in China. Among all mammals, I think I like monkeys the least. Given that red is the color of communism and that the Red Panda is much cuter than the Giant Panda anyway, this animal should be the one utilized to promote Longcanggou. October is probably not a good time to visit this place.

Regular readers to the blog may have noticed Redgannet’s post on some delightful finchbills he saw in China. The first monkey I saw. You may have noticed when conversing with them that the distinction between an animal counting or not is much less important. Really really? What matters is the fact of the encounter.

In Kangding, there is a rather opulent bird hide – two stories, solid construction, spacious, lots of glass, a separate paved parking lot, though mysteriously (and as far as I can tell from my experience of living in China for almost 20 years, not indicative of fundamentally different physical needs of Chinese people) missing a bathroom.
