My dogs eat vegan dog food. They don't have collars made from animals. But they also haven't made a moral choice to not use animals. To say they are vegans is odd to me, though I have done that as the distinction is lost on most people and for the sake of a swift message it does the job. I've signed up).

I've used the term "animal activism" lately as an experiment. I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind. First, note that now PeTA is an "animal advocacy group."

I'm a vegan who thinks we shouldn't be using animals even if we change the conditions of their use. Of course there are oodles of vegetarians who mention veganism and how difficult and restricting it is, and overall I'm having a fairly disheartening experience. After all, who I am doesn't stop at vegan.

The animal rights movement, such as it is, is experiencing somewhat of a crisis of usage. I feel the unique pain they experience when they hear or read ( gasp! ) I feel for the purist also with regard to the terms "animal rights" and "abolition." Once again, the people wrote the rules (43). And I feel for the purists, trust me.
