These dogs were rescued by Chinese activists before they could be slaughtered for meat. According to this article from the NPR site , such rescues are occuring more regularly as dogs are increasingly becoming pets. A good story from China for once.

Stanwood is right near where we live in Seattle and, sadly, home to Pigs Peace Animal Sanctuary which rescues all kinds of animals. horses destined to die and be butchered in one of Canada’s equine slaughterhouses for human consumption abroad.” I can only imagine how they feel. This could halt production of kosher and halal meat in the Netherlands – and lead to similar campaigns in other European countries. However, Jewish and Islamic groups which can prove animals do not suffer more during ritual killing than in an ordinary slaughterhouse will be able to apply for permits.

How many meat-eaters would cut the throat of a cow themselves, and hack open its belly with a knife to empty its intestines? But the thousands of daily deaths of animals are hidden away and on the butcher's shelf meat looks innocuous, nothing like the living thing it was.

The topic was the concept of humans as predators, or hunters, or really, eaters of meat, and I was discussing the many ways in which people misconceived this notion. This allowed the Blumenschine crew to carry out experiments that involved every possible series of events, using animals of different sizes.
