Up north are Snohomish County and Skagit County where two puppy mill raids have led to the rescue of almost 600 pregnant dogs, about 80 percent of whom are pregnant. (We We blogged about the Gold Bar, Snohomish County, raid last week). One of my coworkers is heavily involved in puppy mill issues. What a mess.

So make sure that you can have animals and that your place is large enough.

Other than being a vegan, the most important actions you can take to help animals who are used for food are: Give generously to organizations that help those sentient nonhumans directly, such as Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary , Maple Farm Sanctuary , Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary and Eastern Shore Sanctuary.

Here's the practical issue, though: It involves looking good and it's usually 5am when I blog and I wouldn't want to scare anyone. As for neighbors, a couple of years ago I wrote about how my next-door neighbor's daughter, who is in medical school, visited her parents and brought a puppy (Izzy) from a pet store with her.
