This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

Not a cover species The Black Kite is not actually black, but of course, misleading bird names are not exactly rare. No surprise then that the species is listed as Vulnerable. But then, sanity (or maybe respect for you, the reader) prevailed. Fortunately, they are quite common in Shanghai.

In the end, I truly did set out to reduce the number of birds that I feature here from 1302, my years total species, down to 10-12. The birds are now breeding in the area, but are quite happy to keep coming to the daily feeding station in groups of over 100 birds. My favorite of the stay was this White-cheeked Bulbul.

4 The Love Of Animals

Flashlight with batteries. In case you are not home when disaster strikes, pre-place stickers on your doors to notify emergency workers or neighbors where on your property your animals are located and where to find your emergency pet kit. Make sure you ask if they have any limitations on the number, size, species or breeds they allow.
