It was specifically a video about the primate or ape Gigantopithecus. Now, something that caught my fancy, that was stated by the reactionist/YouTube personality, was that this ape, this early hominid if you would, which died out just prior to the arrival of humans or because of the arrival of humans. Give it a think.

It is technically correct, and recently fashionable, to insist that any living animal is a member of the larger group that contains it phylogenetically, i.e., ancestrally, with that group often named after the known animal that roots the tree. So, for example, humans are apes. The point is, of course, that whales are not cows.

Geladas are the sole survivors of a once abundant branch of primates that historically foraged across the grasslands of Africa, the Mediterranean and India. Their scientific name is Theropithecus gelada, the former word meaning “beast-ape” in Greek. they are the most terrestrial primate after humans. Gelada lip flare and yawn.

To the Editor: Re “An Ape Types in Iowa” (column, Aug. 9): Gail Collins writes: “Human-ape conversation was a very hot topic back in the late 1960s, when researchers first taught a chimpanzee named Washoe to use sign language. The Great Ape Trust is the only place in America where this kind of research still goes on.”
