The 10-year-old Boa was pregnant and had been raised by McAdam since it was a baby. This makes it much harder for people to have empathy for snakes, even though snakes have retained all the biological features that are important to consider for animal ethics (just like turtles and lizards).

Piety is the remedy for religious guilt, and to this emotion we are all witting or unwitting heirs. If meat-eating should ever become confined to those who do not care about animal suffering then compassionate farming would cease. Where there are conscientious carnivores, however, there is a motive to raise animals kindly.

As a recent convert to vegetarianism, I found that it reinforced my feeling that the eating of living, thinking, emotional creatures is just plain wrong. Kristof’s thoughtful exploration of animal rights, I was astonished to read that he continues to eat animals, like geese and pigs, for which he obviously has such affection and respect.
