No wonder there is so much "farm" animal abuse out there. The only cool thing is that Gene Bauer's views on the meat industry are so similar to those expressed on this blog a few weeks ago. Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible.

Herzog states, “The awkward fact is that most wanton animal cruelty is not perpetrated by inherently bad kids but by normal children who will eventually grow up to be good citizens” (34). . Well, as it turns out neither a trip to a slaughterhouse nor killing an animal yourself is powerful enough to make people go vegan.

Abby, I too get very upset by stories and images of what occurs every second of every day to nonhumans and humans alike. I spend plenty of time doing nonprofit work that is unrelated to animals and also doing for-profit work that is unrelated to animals. In other words, I don't immerse myself in animal cruelty.

With 30% of Americans being morbidly obese and another 30+% being seriously overweight, with 50% of Americans suffering from coronary artery disease, with red meat increasingly linked to colorectal, esophageal, liver, and lung cancers , perhaps it's time that beefsteaks go the way of the Edsel.
