A declawed, defanged bear is chained to a stake as hunting dogs bark and snap, trying to force the bear to stand on its hind legs. Hunters say the exercise popular in the state's hilly northwestern corner helps them train their dogs on what to do when they come across a bear during a hunt. State law on the issue is murky.

Someone had called in an animal cruelty report. I had a couple of dogs when I was a kid, but I mostly grew up with cats. There are also many "feral" and "food-aggressive" personality types in humans, but we don't put them down.) But I'm no dog expert. The puppy seemed too thin to me so I asked about her story.

Mike Beebe has signed into law new animal-cruelty restrictions that make aggravated cruelty to cats, dogs and horses a felony on the first offense. Arkansas becomes the 46th state to make cruelty to animals a felony, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

And people wonder why I'm so disappointed by humans. A farm-animal breeder who ran what a prosecutor called "the zoo from hell" was convicted Tuesday of animal cruelty. A jury in West Haverstraw deliberated less than two hours before convicting Robert Everle of all 13 charges of torturing, injuring and starving animals.

Is what he did consciously to his pitbulls that much worse than what we do unconsciously to animals every day? Some of us forget that dogs are mere animals, and that animal mistreatment is as American as Apple iPods. Like Vick, most of us shamelessly abuse and kill animals. I think we have it backward.
