This species is found on the African continent, in Angola, as well as central, eastern, and southern Africa. Ostrich eggs have been used by humans for millennia. Ostrich kicks can kill a human or a potential predator like a lion. Once selected, their prey is chased over a long distance, often several kilometres.

This species prefers wetlands and its numbers have been decimated due to a combination of habitat destruction caused by human population growth and illegal removal of birds and eggs from the wild for the pet and zoo trade. This plain used to be little affected by humans, being grazed by just a few cattle, goats and camels.

“Spooked” is a bit of a strong word as I was very likely the first human this bird had ever seen and it stuck around for quite a while merely five metres away from me. The African or Angola Pitta is the holy grail of the Southern African birder and definitely the “most-wanted” bird in our region. This is so unfair.

White-chested Tinkerbird is one of Africa’s avian mysteries, known only from a single specimen collected in 1964 at Mayau in north-west Zambia, close to the borders of Angola and the DRC. White-headed can be found in huge fig trees in woodlands of east and central Africa with a tiny isolated population in Angola.
