A Near Conjunction

Cocoa Woodcreepers are the largest species of woodcreeper in T&T, and they have a proportionately massive bill. Alas, he was gone before I had a chance to lift my camera. It glared at something in the leaf litter (is there any other way raptors look at anything?) And so, we continued. Definitely a hawk-eagle, but which?

Some don’t work as well as I would like, and others turn out to be birding gold mines, but no matter which species show, it’s always an adventure. For example, the leaf litter didn’t look as dry as other places, and I noticed a fair number of frogs, insects, and small lizards in the understory.

Endless notifications about 3% of intact forest remaining here, another species falling into the endangered species category – it all can get overwhelming sometimes. Bananaquits and Golden-headed Manakins twittered and whirred constantly but any visual confirmation was only achieved with the former species.
