Alas, he was gone before I had a chance to lift my camera. It glared at something in the leaf litter (is there any other way raptors look at anything?) We continued walking, the sounds of a Channel-billed Toucan calling from the canopy and a more distant but no less distinctive vocalization of a Bright-rumped Atilla beckoned.

For example, the leaf litter didn’t look as dry as other places, and I noticed a fair number of frogs, insects, and small lizards in the understory. This fancy antpitta is, alas, rare and more difficult to find in Costa Rica than ever. Hitoy is one of the only remaining reliable spots and we had fine looks at a male.

Alas, nothing showed until there was a brief break in the shower and a Golden-crowned Warbler materialized in the leaf litter just in front of me. My wife retired to catch up on some lost sleep in the car as the rain swelled. Belligerent as always I stayed out, binoculars in the branches, hoping for something – anything really.
