My agenda is to help to make the Ross Sea an international marine protected area. I studied them for 20 years, published one paper and half a dozen blogs about them, talked to the media more times than I can remember and helped the state Institute for Protection of Nature to draft a protection proposal, which went to the City Assembly.

I chalked up 132 species in a pretty relaxed eight days, during which birds shared the agenda with culture. This protected area is of special importance for migrating waders, of which some 27 species were reported here, including Pied Avocet , Temminck’s Stint , Red-necked Phalarope , Sanderling and Dunlin.

of Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Jon Gassett has indicated that if enough people write in protest, the proposed hunting season–due to start this December– will be reconsidered. Hunting is on a steady downturn, and nonconsumptive wildlife pursuits are on a tremendous upswing. We can fight them back in Kentucky, too.
