I chalked up 132 species in a pretty relaxed eight days, during which birds shared the agenda with culture. Black Stork and three pairs of White-tailed Eagles breed here. Common Kingfisher , Common Hoopoe and the European Bee-eater come from their nesting holes at the high loess-bluff of the opposite, right bank of the river.

How Close Is “Too Close” To An Owl?

For a much larger Eurasian Eagle Owl, it compresses to look like a branch, even aiming it’s more bark like wing feathers towards the predator and closes its eyes, to complete the disguise, small owls will do that with us too. Here’s the view of the owl: Note the eye on the right, a tiny slit is open and you can see the pupil.

Lesser Spotted Eagle , Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Lesser Spotted Eagles breed regularly with around 100 pairs in Germany, but unless you know where the territories are you are unlikely to see them. Thanks, Marsh Sandpiper (seen on the right with a redshank on the pic below), your presence was highly appreciated!

Here’s a tidbit from the NRA’s Hunters’ Rights website: “Sandhill cranes are hunted much like geese, with decoys set in fields and hunters stationed in blinds. AND you can use lead shot, which will impact any scavenger like a bald eagle that happens to feed on the carcass you leave. Wicked, right?
