We assembled at nine in the morning in a small parking lot outside the naval base in Key West, Florida. The weeks leading up to spring break had been a whirlwind, and the days before the trip mostly spent driving and exploring Florida. Dry Tortugas National Park: Bird Banding Sooty Terns. It was a heart-pounding scene straight out of Jurassic Park, an odd experience for a laid-back pursuit like birding. Southern Cassowary with chicks by Duncan Wright Carlos Sanchez was particularly appreciative of a new bird for him in Florida. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida.

I then had a year in Florida – beware the alligators and hurricanes! Our first shopping trip when we arrived in Florida was to buy a field guide and that afternoon we thought we had a soft drink can sitting on a fence-you know the brand-no, it’s not that…it’s a cardinal!
