Again, I was making a personal observation about the evolution of my own thought process and asking if anyone else saw things similarly. When it comes to believers, I agree with Phelps that all religious traditions have some kind of basis for mercy or compassion or relieving suffering that we can use in our advocacy.

Animals raised for food suffer miserably. After time in the Marines, I veered strongly away from eating creatures, thinking of their suffering. These farmers work long hours moving animals from pasture to pasture and often struggle with a paucity of meat-processing infrastructure suitable to the needs of small-scale producers.

The process of taking in a stray isn’t usually instantaneous and straightforward. Statistics come to life in the suffering of one dove or one mockingbird, the one needlessly stricken and dying for the sake of a personal choice.
