Yesterday I received an e-mail alert from the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) regarding " a coin operated game that uses live lobsters at the Royal Palm Ale House in Royal Palm Beach. What do you think of this campaign? In this game, the object is to pluck live lobsters out of the water with a joystick-controlled crane."

The advocacy component of old speciesism isn't the campaign to end that exploitation, however. Instead, it is the campaign to modify it. Citing abilities such as nonhuman great apes' ability to learn human languages suggest that animal rights advocates seek nonhuman participation in human society.

I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind. People have a relationship, whether or not they are aware, to the term "animal rights." First, note that now PeTA is an "animal advocacy group."

When I first saw PCRM's " Kickstart Your Health With a Vegan Diet " campaign, I let out a bit of a sigh. And they reach a lot of people who don't have animal rights on their radar but might stop using animals for food if they had something to gain (assuming a clearer conscience isn't something to gain).
