On Surreal Lobster Advocacy

Animal Person

I don't agree that the game is "no different than a lobster tank" (at least conceptually--I haven't seen it), but "animal rights activists" should be campaigning for the cessation of the slaughter and consumption of lobsters, shouldn't they? What do you think of this campaign? My self-appointed job in this blog is to think critically about how our human lives intersect with those of sentient nonhumans, in action and thought.

Over at Animal Rights and AntiOppression , we’ve been discussing tactics and sharing our thoughts and experiences about what works and doesn’t work when it comes to advocacy. The campaign to moralize meat has largely been a failure.

SPECIESISM, by Joan Dunayer, Part Deux

Animal Person

The advocacy component of old speciesism isn't the campaign to end that exploitation, however. Instead, it is the campaign to modify it. In contrast to old-speciesist and new-speciesist advocacy, nonspeciesist advocacy advances the goal of emancipating all sentient beings from human abuse. I realize that in writing about "old speciesism" I failed to define this term that Dunayer uses.

The Longest Struggle: Animal Advocacy from Pythagoras to PETA by Norm Phelps came out in 2007. In a brisk, readable narrative, The Longest Struggle traces the campaigns of animal rights pioneers like Henry Spira, Alex Hershaft, and Ingrid Newkirk, as well as leaders who have come more recently on the scene like Heidi Prescott, Karen Davis, and Bruce Friedrich. Worth a look.

On "Animal Activism"

The most telling part of Krupp's post, which addresses and questions the way women are used in PeTA campaigns has nothing to do with that controversial concept at all. With more than 2 million members across the globe, PETA is the largest animal advocacy group and comparable in size to the human rights organization, Amnesty International. First, note that now PeTA is an "animal advocacy group." I've used the term "animal activism" lately as an experiment.

On the Vegan "Diet"

When I first saw PCRM's " Kickstart Your Health With a Vegan Diet " campaign, I let out a bit of a sigh. Though the health argument isn't ironclad and I wouldn't want to make it the center of my advocacy, I have to remember who the messenger is here and what the context is. And if this campaign increases the number of people who decrease their animal usage in their diets, that's a great step. My dogs eat vegan dog food. They don't have collars made from animals.

Animal Ethics

Yes, racists are allowed to “spew racism,” but they are not allowed to encourage criminal activities, and if they were to carry their “advocacy” to the point of distributing videos that depicted the actual maiming or killing of the people they would like to get rid of, they would not be able to claim First Amendment protection. Why isn’t that your position concerning the ability of Congress to restrict campaign speech paid for with corporate treasury funds?
