I'm not sure how this fits into my support of animal rights though. I think that ocean life, with the exception of mammals, are often overlooked because they are not the sentient, communicating species that we identify with, like primates, dogs, cats, etc. If you are eating a fish, you are still eating a living thing.

I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind. People have a relationship, whether or not they are aware, to the term "animal rights." They've hijacked enough already!

In the past I have attributed some of this conflict to differences between the conservation mindset and that of animal rights/animal welfare. I wonder instead if this is actually about the difference between advocacy and action, and about the way things ‘should’ be. Dogs should not be used to hunt foxes.
